Dorothy Dushkin

Composer Dorothy (Smith) Dushkin (1903-92) was born in Glencoe, Illinois, and died in Amherst, Massachusetts. After graduating from Smith College she spent two years studying music theory and composition with Nadia Boulanger at the Conservatoire Americain (est. 1921) at Fontainebleau, from 1926 until 1928, where she met her future husband David Dushkin. After returning to the Chicago area in 1928, they founded a music school (originally, The Music Institute of Chicago; today, The Northshore Music Center). In 1948 the Dushkins bought a farm in Weston, Vermont, on the northwest side of the Green Mountains National Forest, where they founded the Kinhaven Music School in 1952, which still operates today. Dorothy Dushkin's Papers are held at the Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.
